1-on-1 – Stopping the Attacker Drill

The 1-on-1 – Stopping the Attacker Drill is designed to help defenders improve their ability to contain penetration, control space, and force tough shots or passes.
The offensive player starts with an advantage or in motion, and the defender must use proper stance, footwork, and angles to stop the drive.
This drill builds defensive toughness, lateral quickness, and game-ready reaction timing.

Initial layout and description

Gather the players for couples. Each pair comes from the same bottom line.First we will explain the exercise in Defense mode the Player Without the Ball (JSB).

  • In Defence mode the Player Without the Ball (JSB), the defender starts within the court, and the attacker (JSB) starts from the outside.

We will have two ways of measuring the success of the defense. In this initiation is to slow down the progress of the attacker into the hoop.

The criteria will be the following:

  • By time: The coach will give the output signal and measure the time it takes for the attacker to reach a bottom line to another. To more time to take the attacker to get to the other bottom line, the better it will be defended by the advocate.

However, in loneliness this criterion is unreliable because it does not end to give you all the information that we would like to have and then be able to apply it in a situation of actual game play. It is for this reason that we propose the criterion space.
  • For space: The attacker comes out on its own initiative. Will have to see what location the attacker ‘breaks’ to the defender. In the case of always staying the defender between JSB and bottom-line, we may take this as a good performance.

We came to the conclusion that we will have to combine both of them, but posts have to stay with a single, perhaps it would be better to stay with the criterion space, since it is more easy to observe.

  • In Defence of Player With the Ball (JCB), the attacker begins within the field, a step ahead of the bottom line.

Finally, remember that this exercise is only an initiation.
In the following exercises we introduce, enter variants how to spaces to receive or location of the ball.

Variants

  • Delimit space (field whole divided by 2 sides, pitch the entire 3, 4 and 5 blocks, the same with a half court).
  • Defend with hands behind the back, or an arm behind the back.

For exercise, in the form of defense JCB:

  • Achieve the greatest number of boats of the JCB.
  • Steal the ball.
