Advanced crossovers (combos and countermoves)

In this article, we will analyze the advanced crossovers. We have to take into account the combos themselves and their countermoves.
For the realization of this work I have relied on the video ’23 ways to destroy your defender’ of Ganon Baker (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram).
Below we will explain what is a combo and what a countermovement.

Definition of combo

‘Action of stringing several of crossovers to generate an advantage to drive or get space and time to be able to throw to the basket’. (Cedric Arregui).

Description

The combos are based on a combination of crossovers. It is unthinkable to begin to teach/learn this resource technicians without first mastering each crossovers separately. Without a doubt, is the final step in the domain of the base of the Pot.

At what times will change from hand advanced?

  • When you have not generated sufficient advantage with just a change of hands.
  • Before defenders to JCB very active and persistent.

Objectives for teaching

  1. Master each of the crossover involved in the change of hand advanced (including the ability of not having to look at the ball).
  2. Keep the tension of the pot as the changes are made by hand.
  3. Read the reaction of the defender and to be prepared to run the countermovement.
  4. Make an exit and explosive change of hand

Most common errors

  1. Do not dominate each of the changes of hand involved in the crossover advanced.
  2. Lose the tension of the pot as the following changes are made by hand.
  3. Do not read the defensive reaction and not be able to continue running the countermovement.
  4. Make the change of hand without that it is accompanied by a change of pace.

Definition of countermovement

Progression methodology of the teaching of the changes of hand advanced

Before considering to teach/learn to make changes of hand advanced, including combos and countermoves, it is of vital importance that dominate each of the crossovers that go to compose each one of those combinations.

Once this first requirement, there is a need for adding a second change of hands. For this reason we recommend starting from the change of hand front or end with the change of front hand since, a priori, it would have to be the change hand more accessible and recurrent for any of nuestr@s players.

If we take a few accounts, we will realize that if we know of 5 crossovers different (frontal crossover, lower legs -front to back and back to front), behind-the-back and back, only starting with a change of front hand and chaining a second crossover, we already have 5 different combinations. If we calculate all the possibilities ignoring that we can start with any of the 5 crossovers, we will have 25 different combinations. If we have that we have to work laterality, we will have 50 different combinations.

The conclusion is that with only two crossovers, we already have 50 different moves. There are many gestures for teaching and learning.
Let us not lose an instant, and never belittle the individual technique of 1×0.

The following steps in the teaching methodology will be:

  • Put a defender with an anticipatory response or exaggerated
  • Place a defender with some limitation
  • Play against a real defender

Final considerations

It is impossible to expect our players to perform a combo in the middle of a match if before has not been practiced. While it is true that there is always some playful with talent, there will be a moment in which that talent is no more yes, and you have to get to work (hoping that it has not entered into torpor final).

As a last point, note that it is not imperative to go more than 2 or 3 changes of hand chained. The most important thing is that it is carried out quickly and effectively to not have to curls the curl. If it has been generated advantage, our player will have to be able to identify and take advantage of it. In addition, do not forget that the error is part of the learning process, and it is likely that our players take on to master them. As coaches, it will be our obligation and our duty to accompany them in this process. We recommend not to punish a bad execution (since that would be to the detriment of learning) and what we want is that the player is encouraged to perform in-game gestures new that is training to have new technical resources.
