The Transfer of Athletics in Basketball

The article that follows, ‘The Transfer of Athletics in Basketball,’ was written as a work of reflection for one of the subjects of the Level 1 coach course FBM.

Athletics is the oldest sport in the world. In fact, it has always been present in our daily lives, from prehistory to hunt until our days contemporaries when it came time to work, knowing that if it didn’t run, it sure is late. In regards to the sport, there are numerous modalities of this sport which is used, so partial and no extent, in the collective sports. It does not matter the measures, care more about the quality, frequency, and the combination of each one of them.

Then I will appoint all forms of athletics that are present in the sport of basketball.

The run: pace, stride and a lot of technique

First of all, the race. There are many types of races, from the marathon, through the race to the bottom, distance and speed. All of them have the common pattern of locomotion, but some variants were very different. Is the resistance and speed. These two are combined and managed in a different extent. The basketball player is constantly juggling with them, depending on the situation.

On defense, if the movement is to realize you need a tour of the medium-or long-and you’re defending the man with the ball, it is very likely that the defender to stop to take the defensive position and move down to the indicated point (though it varies a lot depending on each coach), that will be your attacker or an intermediate point in the case of a help.

In the case of attack, the attacker is forced to get away from your defender by performing a change of pace, and many times, alternating with changes of address with the sole purpose of creating a situation of advantage to be able to receive the ball. In addition to that, it is also true that in many computers these movements are written on the board and the player must be faithful to the guidelines of the system or the coach, in the background, might look like the path of a cross , or cross country, as it is delimited in advance and in which situations can vary.

It is evident that it is not the same thing a sprint across the street from the track of the sports that a career in the middle of the field in which there may be variations from one lap to another. In the case of the attacker without the ball, these variants can be translated into blocks or players have to dodge.

Without a doubt, one of the most important aspects to improve in our sport is the technique of career. Many players do not know how to run. Run with the back in a vertical position and often results in injury to back or knees.

We have to work on running technique. Insist that lean the trunk forward and have a few strides spacious (up to the knee and extending the legs when it supports the leg to carry the momentum). I’m sure our players are cansarían less to the economy of effort in something as simple as you may be running, and thus, be able to invest those efforts on actions that may not be as automated and natural as it can be the action of running.

The breaks, a question of support

Another skill that we found and that is intrinsically linked to our sport is the jump. In athletics there are three types of jump (natural or without instrument), and each of them differs clearly from one another by several aspects: the direction of the jump, the previous race, the leap, the form of take-off, flight, and the way you land every jump.

In the high jump, there are three ways to jump different; scissors, falling of the form “true and natural” (it is a leap that yes you can raise); roll, (that could be done, but I would be exposed to physical integrity); and style “Fosbury” that turns out to be the most commonly used due to its effectiveness, but for which the landing without the mat today would prove to be very dangerous…

In the long jump, the most used is the leap with whipped topping. Before making the leap, a progressive career to take inertia and thus increase the duration of the phase of flight. The landing of the jump is done posing butt on the sand bank. Obviously, the fact of making the landing with this part of the body is done for a technical reason of the regulations (the regulations specific that records the distance from the mark later).

The triple jump would be the one that most resembles the jumps that are performed in our sport. The first support would be to take the first leap, during which we held the reception of the pass or the shot of the ball after you pot. The following two jumps or supports would correspond to the steps of the entrance to the basket. It is a comparison quite good because if you have a big transfer in the motor elements is concerned. If we got rid of the ball and the opponents, you see that it looks pretty.

However, there is a small detail that makes the difference. In an entry to the basket, the last jump is performed up to stop the force of inertia of the race prior, because otherwise, the ball hits the board, and flies off in the opposite direction (that is, if we take into account that the majority of basketball do not have enough space in between the bottom line and the wall…).

Throws: strength, and marksmanship

The last comparison that I will do will be in terms of the releases. In basketball we have several types of pitches. Are the releases to the basket and throws that are made with the intention of passing the ball. Releases to the basket are something very specific to our sport. Any person who is throwing any object with that motor pattern will be doing a clear representation and ideal shot to the basket. In terms of the passes, tend to be chest, with one hand, cut, pumped, above the head, behind the back…we could name all the types of passes in basketball, but there’s one that looks pretty, at least in the motor pattern, a type of release from athletics.

When used to refer to the long passes with one hand we have referred to the passes of baseball. I think that we could appoint other way for several reasons. The use of a type of pass characteristic of other sport collective is nothing creative, rather betrays a lack of imagination when it comes to naming a pass that is also used in our sport and that can be invented, without having seen before the action feature of baseball in which the defender picks up the ball and passes it to the launcher (in addition, I do not think that in baseball to refer to the pass of basketball’s most widely used counter-attacks…). We might call it a long pass-high, it would be more simple, although it would not give the idea of what the motor pattern.
Therefore, I dare to introduce a new name to this type of pass, the pass javelin. The motor pattern is very similar, and since I speak of the positive transference that has the athletics in basketball has its reason to be.

Track and field is a sport which is more primitive and is completely understandable, which is present in most of the collective sports. Before the end of this exhibition, I will remember that this type of transfer of athletics basketball seeks no world record, or brand new to overcome. It is only and exclusively on the employment of basic skills of athletics, such as running, jumping and throwing, in basketball.

The use of each of them depends on the situation of the moment, of the reading and interpretation that make the player, the decision and the execution of the action to be performed.

Without a doubt, this requires that you have a good eye when performing calculations of trajectory, force, distance, and time. As coaches, we can and we must train these aspects for the simple reason that they are going to be present in all the actions of our game and that will affect all of our players alike.

The transfer has to be a tool in our favor. From there we can take advantage of it. However, we also have to point out that there may be transfers negative that may impair learning. Our work as sports coaches and sports educators is to plan meticulously to ensure the success of the teaching process and to set a good foundation that supports later learning. With the athletics, we must do so because it is a skill that is inherent to the game, and in this case, in our sport.
