In this article, monograph, we will see what the pivot foot, how to set up and what actions we can perform.

Definition

‘Action that is performed by the player that has the ball already checked that consists of re-turning on the toe or heel of the foot fixed on the ground.’ (Cedric Arregui).

Description

The action of using the Pivot Foot to turn over it is called ‘Swing’. In Latin American countries also used the terms ‘pivot’ and ‘flip’.
The essential roles of the pivot foot in stopsfirst step , and lay-up. More taking into account the inclusion of the Step 0, from 1/10/2017.

At the time of writing the items I always carry out a process of re-learning. I believe that to be able to teach the best possible way there is to learn as best as possible. Then you will be able to be able to convey as best as possible.

We know how to call the foot that is established as a Pivot Foot, but… what name you receive the other foot?

How to call the foot that is not the pivot foot

After consultation with colleagues, and after trawling through numerous books and writings, I have observed that barely mentioned the other foot and that appointed him even less. From there, I encourage you to promote the term of the Support Foot free. The idea is to convey its functionality to the player. If, in addition, we transmit the idea that the Foot Support Free is latest legal support performed, it is likely to locate better the Pivot Foot. Consider one more way to teach how to differentiate one foot to the other (or at least to complement the more classic).

Applications and implications of technical-tactics of the Pivot Foot

The Pivot Foot has more relevance than we think and it is used for:

  • Having an axis about which to rotate in order to reorient themselves, repositioned and reequibrarse.
  • Protect the ball. Establish a fixed point on which to establish an axis, both in feints of output as in completions.
  • Be the support on which they perform the boost in output.

Applications and implications of technical-tactics of the Foot Support Free

The Foot Support Free has more function:

  • Find and lead a new direction with the utility to protect the ball and/or threaten the ring.
  • Dribble possible open first step, cross first step, or in reverse.

All of these actions would have an impact on the Defense because even though the Pivot Foot , and the Foot Support Free to be a technical basis offensive, also should be taken into account in the processes of perception and decision of the ombudsman to the Player with the Ball.

We can distinguish two senses of rotation clear
frontal Gyrus (forward):

  • In blue, using the right foot as a pivot foot , and advancing the left foot as a foot support free.
  • In red, using the left foot as a pivot foot , and advancing the right foot as a foot support free.

Turn dorsal (back):

  • In pink, by using the right foot as a pivot foot and behind the left foot as a foot support free.
  • In green, using the left foot as a pivot foot and holding the right foot as a foot support free.

It is vital to know the concept of the pivot foot and all the implications that entails.
You have to be able to identify, both being the attacker and as a defender.

Objectives for teaching

icon, ok
  1. Understand how to set the pivot foot.
  2. Get to know all the variety of existing stops to be able to locate the pivot foot.
  3. Keep the balance at the time of the stop.
  4. Locate the pivot foot automatically.
  5. To associate what types of outputs (torn) and what addresses you have available in function of the support that you previously made.
  6. Turn while holding the pivot foot in contact with the ground (either on the tip or on the heel).
  7. In terms of departures, start to throw (the ball leaves the hand) before lifting the pivot foot.

Most common errors

icon, fail, error
  1. Unknown how to set the pivot foot.
  2. Unknown all the variety of existing stops and does not locate the pivot foot.
  3. Unbalance at the time of the stop , and make more support due, drag/slide and/or lifting the pivot foot and back support, by their own will, or for loss of balance. (Art. 25 – Advancement Illegal)
  4. Do not locate the pivot foot and is thinking about what may be losing track of the game and/or taking a long time to decide.
  5. Not associated types of outputs available address in the function of the supports that you previously made.
  6. Rotated by dragging the pivot foot or alternate toe and heel (and vice versa) in contact with the soil, thus committing the ‘Steps’. (Art. 25 – Advancement illegal
  7. Lifting the pivot foot before I started to bounce up and commits a violation of ‘Steps’ (Art. 25 – Advancement Illegal).

Rubric for identification of the pivot foot

Below we present a proposal rubric to identify the Pivot Foot.

  • Player controls the ball in the air and falls:
    • with a stop at a time, you can choose pivot foot. The Pivot Foot will be the foot that you don’t lift.
    • with a stop in two times, the Pivot Foot will be the first that was resting on the ground.
    • supporting only one foot, and that will be the Pivot Foot.
  • Player controls the ball in static
    • with one foot resting (Step 1), and supports the other foot (Step 2). The first foot that had supported will be the Pivot Foot.
    • with both feet flat on the floor. The Pivot Foot will be the foot that you don’t lift.
  • Player controls the ball with a foot on the ground and in motion (situation possible Step Zero):
    • We have the first support and it is recommended that it be considered as Step 0 to identify then the Pivot Foot.
      • If the player gives the other support stops, will come to be a stop on two times and the first support will be the Pivot Foot.
      • In case of other two supports, it will have those supports as Step 1 and Step 2. The Pivot Foot shall Step 1.

In short, the pivot foot will be always in the penultimate support made whenever there are 2 or 3 legal supports. In the case of controlling the ball in the air and land on one foot, that will be the Pivot Foot (although don’t get to give another support or swing – curious case right?).

The Pivot Foot on the Rules of FIBA

What is most important from the point of view of the Rules of FIBA is that:

  • lifting the Pivot Foot always and when you release the ball to pass or shoot before returning to his support. The rule says that you cannot go back to support the Pivot Foot without releasing the ball before. In the case of a slide, or return to support the pivot foot, is incurred in violation of Article 25 – Advancement Illegal.
  • You can’t go back to support the Pivot Foot in a stop (the case of the gesture of the blunders done wrong in the one who controls the ball prior to jumping with one foot already supported, jumps, and falls again on that same foot).
  • Rule of Steps of output: Continue to exist, although now it is much more difficult to occur. Lifting the Pivot Foot before you start to bounce up and down, it will be committed breach of steps of output. I should point out that the action of the Boat starts when the ball leaves the hand(s).

Note: when you perform the action of the Dribbling sequence Step Zero, you can lengthen the time to hurl always and as you start up the Pot before picking up the Step 1.

Then we leave an explanatory video of the Pivot Foot done by the Federation Cantabrian Basketball (available in your Youtube channel):

Teaching and methodology – How to train your Pivot Foot

The Pivot Foot is closely linked to the stops and the first step. We will have to take into account the inclusion of these fundamentals to teach progressively its various uses.
We will give priority to the stops before the first step since the way to make the supports that will determine which is the Pivot Foot.

  • 1×0:
    • On the basis of stops at 1 time. Players will no be facing the hoop, make a stop at 1 time, is re-oriented and then go out to attack the hoop (you can use fakes pass and shot before throwing them away).
    • On the basis of stops in 2 times. Like the previous exercise, except that now they will have to identify the pivot foot, and the foot support free.
    • On the basis of stops in 3 times, just like the previous exercise, except that now it will be imperative that they receive with a foot on the ground and being in the movement (Zero Step / Step 0).
    • Getting in movement and making stops in 1, 2 and 3 times. In the case of the stops in 1-and 2-times, must also be introducing the variant of the receptions in the air.

Then we can focus on the work of the first step.

  • 1×1 with passive defender (exercise to identify the Pivot Foot):
    • The defender passes the ball to the attacker who comes from the front and:
      • the attacker will making stops in 1, 2 and 3 times. In each of the stops, you will have to make outputs open, crossed/closed and in reverse. You will be able to determine what type of outputs do. Also, you may indicate a direction towards the exit, as it may include the use of feints.
      • the attacker will listen to your passive defender will indicate what will be the Pivot Foot. You can also do the same, indicating what will be the Support Foot Free.
  • 1×1 with real defender:
    • Make the classic 1×1 with defender passes the ball to the attacker, and we shall go on to state:
      • what kind of stop to make (for the attacker must decide how to make the stop to locate).
      • what will be the Pivot Foot, or what will be the Support Foot Free.

We recommend the use of the teaching styles of Guided Discovery and Resolution of Problems for the progressions above proposals.

Final considerations

The Pivot Foot is a basis of the technique of the individual, which determines and affects all the possible actions of the player with the ball (JCB) involving stops and/or first step in the top three threats available with ball (dribblingpassing and shooting).
It is a basic concept to master by our players since in the event of not being able to differentiate the Pivot Foot of the Foot Support Free will incur a violation of Advancement Illegal (‘Steps’).

It’s our job as coaches to design games and exercises from school to categories (pre)benjamin and fry to strengthen the knowledge on this basis.
