Stops

Definition

‘Action to stop the scrolling of a balanced and controlled. Can be done under three circumstances: without ball, to receive a pass, and after leaving to hurl’. (Cedric Arregui).

Description

The Stops are one of the fundamentals that come standard on any player. Although it is a foundation that has to work, the players already know put that in many games without a ball are made that type of motor actions. The Stop is essential to be able to play with a change of paceEither without the ball, receiving a pass or after you have stopped bouncing. The most important thing is to be able to control our feet because they are the parts of the body closest to the ground that will allow us to control the rest of the body. In addition, it will be important to know what types of stop can be done in each situation because that will determine the Pivot Foot , and the possibility to choose him or not.

Master the different types of stops it will help us to:

  • Gain space with respect to our advocate when we receive a pass, or when we have completed the boat
  • Anticipate possible outputs, making the stop is more appropriate to the situation.
  • Play with the supports to be able to reorient our placement and get an advantage at the time of exit.
  • Play with the rhythm changes. Many times the defenders relax when you see that a player who has just received a pass for. You can stop and get out immediately.

This foundation must be mastered since ages early. A player who doesn’t know to stop it is a player predictable and with a single motion. In addition, if you do not master this foundation the actions to be performed afterwards they will have a greater difficulty. Do not take it for granted that by being a foundation, which comes standard does not deserve to be trained.Of note is that thanks to the inclusion of the Step Zero (since 1 October 2017), now there are more ways to make the stops. In this article we will look at what types of stops currently exist and how to work them performing an education progressive.

Types of stops

stops, stop, technique, map, conceptual

It is imperative to begin with the most important: the time in which it will stop.
What spatial position occupy at the time to control the ball? This is undoubtedly the question that will give us the keys to be able to identify what types of stops we will be able to perform (both legally by the Rules of FIBA as physically).
The player controls the ball:

  • In static:
    • The player is standing with both feet in contact on the ground. Stop at 1 time, with a choice of Pivot Foot. The foot does not lift will automatically become the Pivot Foot. It is unlikely that this situation in game since Basketball is a sport very dynamic.
    • The player is dealt with a foot propped up and IS NOT IN MOTION. There is Step Zero. The foot that is supported is the Pivot Foot. When you are finished posing the foot that had risen, complete Stop in 2 times. Even more rare than the previous one.
    • Another stop that could be done legally, is that in which a player is on a static (hopping), controls the ball and then performed a ‘mini-break’ to finish fall with both feet simultaneously (stop at 1 time) and without the possibility of pivot. There is no advantage. It is absurd. Comment that this kind of stop yes it would be legal (in the unlikely case of being converted into reality).
  • In the air:
    • The player falls in with both feet simultaneously. It is a stop on 1 time with the possibility of choosing the Pivot Foot.
    • The player falls in supporting first one foot and then the other. The first support is the Pivot Foot. It is a stop in 2 times with the possibility of swing.
    • The player falls in supporting first one foot and then give a small break to finish fall with both feet simultaneously. It is a stop on 2-stroke complete with a stop at 1 time. There is No possibility of swing because the pivot foot ‘left behind’.
  • With a foot propped up and on the move (essential conditions for the possibility of using the Step Zero):
    • After the first support (Step 0), the player continues with a stop at 1 time. You have the possibility of swing choosing Pivot Foot. Is a stop in 3 times continued with a stop in 1 time with the possibility swing choosing the Pivot Foot.
    • After the first support (Step 0), the player performs other support (with the other foot, in case of be on the same foot would incur a Breakthrough Illegal -‘Steps’), and finally ends with a stop at 1 time. Is a stop in 3 times finished with a stop at 1 time, with no possibility of swing.
    • After the first support (Step 0), the player suffered two other supports, alternating feet. It is a stop on 3 times ‘standard, being the Pivot Foot on the second support (Step 1), and being able to lift the foot with the one who made the last support (Step 2).

Objectives for teaching

icon, ok
  1. Look at the space available to make the stop.
  2. Display the time of ball control. To anticipate if you will be able to control the ball remain static, in the air or with a foot on the ground and in motion.
  3. Decide on the type of stop to make.
  4. To synchronize the order of support of the foot to make the stop at a time, two times or three times.
  5. Slow down the scrolling using the supports for braking and end up in basic position of triple threat (or double threat if you ran out of pot).
  6. Identify is the Pivot Foot.

Most common errors

icon, fail, error
  1. Don’t look at the available space,
  2. Does not display the time in which control of the ball. You will have an added difficulty to decide then.
  3. Can’t decide what kind of stopgoing to perform.
  4. It does not synchronize the feet, running the risk of tripping, make braces more and end up making Advancement illegal (‘Steps’).
  5. Do not stop in time or slows descoordinativamente. Ends unbalanced and have to take some extra time to rebalance. (slows down decision making and fluency of the game, in addition to granting extra time to the defender to recover or go to steal the ball).
  6. It does not identify the Pivot Foot, and makes the ‘steps’(Advancement Illegal) –already lifting the Pivot Foot and:
    1. you are encouraged to support (before releasing the ball to pass it or throw it away)
    2. or in case of lifting the Pivot Foot before starting the boat.

Teaching and methodology – How to train stops

At the time of train stops, we must highlight the importance of the moment in which the control of the ball. This can happen in two situations:

Before you start to throw away: after receiving a pass (or intercept), capturing a rebound. After you have stopped throwing them away. Therefore there may be a situation in which they make two stops: a before throwing them away, and another having thrown away. It is essential to include the three possibilities (trabajándolas separately and jointly).

We recommend starting with a job 1×0 and then do the work 2×0 (for couples without opposition). It is essential that you go from the simplest to the most complex. Never go mixing types of stops in stage of initiation. Players must know what they are practicing. We recommend starting with situations in static, then with control of the ball in the air and on the last Step Zero. In addition, in the 1×0 we will take advantage of the potential resources that we have to make the auto-passes (against the wall and against the dash).

In the teaching of the stops we will use the following materials:

In the work of 1×0, self-showings start being chopped and:- controlling the ball already in static with the two feet on the ground.- controlling the ball already in static with one foot already supported and finishing pose to the other.- controlling the ball already in static with one foot already supported and re-jump to fall with both feet at the same time.

The next progression will be done with auto-passes chopped, with a high bounce, so that the player have to move and jump to control the ball. Can also be done by throwing up the ball and catch it after you have stopped that boat, or without allowing it to dribble :- controlling the ball in the air, falling with both feet simultaneously.- controlling the ball in the air and falling to first with one foot and then the other.- controlling the ball in the air, supporting first one foot and then giving them a break to finish fall with both feet simultaneously.

The final progression is to include the Step Zero. We will insist on the time of ball control. The most common error that made the players is NOT to display OR anticipate the support with the foot advance already supported. This causes you to believe that you control the ball by having the foot advance already supported when in reality they still have the foot more behind even supported. Another common mistake is to control the ball in the air.

In this last progression will ask you what to do walking to the start, trot, and then finally with race. The most important thing is to control the ball with a foot propped up and on the move. In no time the specific rule, a minimum speeds. Fundamental work still more situations for control of the ball and the players are clear about the concept of Zero Step.

We can even challenge them to discover new stops appeared with the emergence of the Zero Step in the Regulations (whether through guided discovery or problem solving).

Note: For earlier age, and people with poor coordination, we recommend the use of games of the yard (like the tulip, the hideout English and hopscotch) and stairs of coordination.

1×0:

  • Auto-skip + stop + auto-skip + stop + … (+ shot)
  • Auto-skip + stop + pot + auto-skip + stop + pot + … (+ shot)
  • Auto-pass + pot + stop + auto-pass + pot + stop + … (+ shot)
  • Auto-skip + stop + pot + stop + auto-skip + stop + pot + stop + … (+ shot)

In the work by pairs, in addition to using the recommendations of the 1×0, we can also take advantage to practice the different types of pass. Yes, once you master the stops receiving passes simple. Can you give us a plus of difficulty vary the multiple trajectories that arise from different types of passes.2×0:

  • Skip + stop + pass + stop + … + (- shot -)
  • Skip + stop + pot + pass + stop + pot + … + (- shot -)
  • Pass + pot + stop + Pass + pot + stop + … (+ shot)
  • Skip + stop + pot + stop + pass + stop + pot + stop + … + (- shot -)

Final considerations

The technical rationale of the stops may seem simple. And it is not. Too many times falls in the simplicity, and we limit ourselves to classify them according to their times. Since the onset of the Step Zero (1/10/2017) still need to get used to hearing talk of stops in 3 times. There are many stalls different and not all of them are so well-known. Of course, remember that the stops will determine what will be the Pivot Foot (a fundamental piece of information at the time of exit and/or termination close to the hoop).
The function of all knowledge is to be able to use it and apply it later. Are the resources. Endow with our players of the maximum resources possible and most importantly, teach them to use them appropriately in each situation.
It is amazing to see that the players know the Game. We will do our best because we are fully aware of.
Even the most basic of our sport, involving a huge complexity for all the variety of shades that surround them.
Go ahead with the Stops!
